Everything You Need to Know about Port Forwarding!

Port forwarding is defined as opening a port and sending messages to certain devices. Or, you can say that ‘Port is a communication endpoint in the networking system.’
It can be recognized as the 16-bit unsigned number, and each number specifies a particular process.

The primary role of port forwarding is to send data via a networking device popularly known as ‘Router.’ Now, you all are pretty much familiar with the router device. However, if you don’t here is a short intro for that:- 

‘A router is a device that transfers data packets between computing networks.’ The main goal of a router is to connect a device through the ISP. Now, let’s get back to the Port forwarding and know how it works, what its characteristics are, and how you can forward ports easily.

How to forward ports easily?

We have already discussed Port Forwarding and its use. Here is the step-by-step guide which will definitely help you how to forward ports easily:-

i) Quickly, assign the fixed IP address to the computer on the local network. Make sure you don’t change the port forwarding.

  • Open ‘Command Prompt’ on the system and enter the ‘ipconfig’ command.
  • Once done, open the connection properties from the ‘Network Center’ and set your static IP address.
  • You have access to your router.

ii) In the next step, you need to set up your Port Forwarding. Though you have configured the static IP address you can now set up the port forwarding settings.

  • When you have access to your router as an admin quickly check for the port forwarding settings. You can find the port forwarding options under the categories such as Network, Wireless or advanced
  • Once you have successfully find the port forwarding category fill the port number that you need to forward.

iii) The last step is to verify the port because it’s possible that even after entering the right program, you might be unable to access the port. The reason behind this is a firewall. Firewall sometimes creates a problem, and that’s why it is necessary to see an online port checker tool.

Now, before moving on to the overall summary of the article, I think you must know about Port Triggering and how it’s different from port forwarding. A router network uses the 192.168.1.1 Login which helps in port forwarding.

Port Triggering V/S Port Forwarding

So, port triggering is a technique that helps multiple local computers if port forwarding wants to reach the final destination. Basically, port triggering assists port forwarding in reaching local devices.

Well, if you see practically, there is a massive difference in these two. The reason for this is because of their use of open and closed ports. The overall insight of port triggering is that it is much safer than the port forwarding as it limits the time in which port is open.
